IWONA LEMKE AT PRO LA in 1983
When Iwona Lemke was 25, she was invited to have a show at PRO LA Gallery. For the show, she wrote an alternative PRO LA manifesto in which she subverted Parfum’s influential position in the art world while also playfully exhorting Parfum as a pro-feminist. Her exhibition consisted of a series of geometric abstract paintings incorporating the term “PRO LA,” and a performance with reading her own manifesto. During the performance, she irreverently “feminized” the artist’s impressive library by spraying it with perfume. The assembled audience ended up eating a cake, another sly nod to women’s work and wiles. 

In 1984 Andrzej Partum produced the publication in Copenhagen documenting the event.
